New Romney 14th Century History

New Romney was one of the Cinque Ports (so called because there were originally five, though their number eventually grew to 42), set up to defend England against possible invasion from France.
This is a threat that continued to be taken seriously from the 14th century right through to the end of World War II, and the landscape around the town contains many military relics.Among them are the Martello towers that dot the coast, built to act as watch towers against a possible

invasion by Napoleonic troops, and the Royal Military Canal, which runs to the north of Romney, dug in 1804–6 to enable troops to move rapidly around this difficult and marshy country.
New Romney church has a memorial to the children's author, Edith Nesbit (1858–1924), whose much-loved story of The Railway Children (1906) may have been inspired by the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway, which passes through the town.
